Information
The New Castle, sometimes also called Furchtenberg, was built in the early 14th century as a guard fortress over an important trade route. Its size and strategic location made it one of the most important castles in North Moravia. The castle gradually underwent several reconstructions, reaching its greatest expansion under Margrave John Henry, who expanded it with mighty fortifications with six prismatic towers in the years 1360-1375.
Although its owners changed frequently, the greatest influence on its appearance and fate was Bernard of Cimburk, who used the castle as his base for robbery raids into the surrounding area. The castle was finally destroyed in 1471 during Matthias Corvinus's campaign in Moravia, which marked its end as a military fortress. Today, there are still significant remains of towers, castle walls and other buildings.
