The Šance Reservoir, located in the Moravian-Silesian Beskydy Mountains, is one of the most important water structures in the Czech Republic. This valley dam on the Ostravice River was built in the 1960s and still provides drinking water for the Ostrava region and its surroundings. Just an hour's drive from the Wellness Hotel Pod Kyčmolem, you will find yourself in the midst of beautiful nature, which is ideal for rest and relaxation.
Information
The Šance water reservoir, located on the upper reaches of the Ostravice river, is part of the water management system of the Odra basin. It was built between 1964 and 1969 with the aim of covering the growing demands for drinking water in the region. Today, it serves not only to supply the population with drinking water, but also to protect against floods, regulate flows and use energy. The reservoir is surrounded by strict sanitary zones to ensure high water quality, and any recreation or fishing is prohibited.
The technical parameters of the reservoir are impressive: the maximum height of the dam is 63.5 meters, the length of the dam at the crown is 342 meters, and the total volume of the reservoir reaches 56.366 million m³. The reconstruction, which took place between 2015 and 2018, ensured the modernization of the reservoir and its readiness to face up to a ten-thousand-year flood wave.
Activities and experiences
Although the reservoir itself is inaccessible for recreational activities due to water protection, its surroundings offer a wide range of options for tourists and nature lovers. The Beskydy Mountains are famous for their offer of hiking trails and cycling trails that allow you to discover the beauty of the local landscape. Recommended routes include trails around the Lysé hory massif or hikes to the Smrk peak, from where visitors can enjoy breathtaking views.
For families with children or couples looking for a romantic trip, a walk along the educational trail "Around Šancí", which offers information about the history and technical attractions of the reservoir, is ideal. For sports enthusiasts, there are also mountain biking trails available.
If you want to recharge your batteries after a day's trip, you can return to the Hotel Pod Kyčmolem and enjoy local gastronomy. Our restaurant offers traditional dishes made from regional ingredients, and our beer from our own brewery will perfectly complement your culinary experience.
